The Boston Globe announces formation of Boston Globe Media
Boston Globe Press Release
BOSTON -- The publisher of The Boston Globe, Richard Gilman, today announced the formation of Boston Globe Media and named two veteran newspaper executives - Richard J. Daniels and Mary Jacobus - to new posts as part of a restructuring aimed at maximizing the potential and the deep market coverage of properties owned by The New York Times Company in New England.
Daniels, currently president and general manager of the Globe, is being promoted to the newly created position of president, Boston Globe Media. He will have responsibility for enhancing strategic initiatives and business development at the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, the Globe's direct mail subsidiary Globe Specialty Products, the Globe's joint venture with Metro Boston, and The New York Times Company's investment in New England Sports Ventures.
Daniels, a 23-year-veteran of the Globe, will also develop new products aimed at enhancing the position of the Globe's media portfolio in New England.
Gilman simultaneously appointed Jacobus as the Globe's new president and general manager. Prior to joining the Globe she was president and CEO of Fort Wayne Newspapers, Inc., and publisher of the Knight Ridder-owned News-Sentinel, both located in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Jacobus, who has a broad-based newspaper background in marketing, advertising and circulation, will oversee all day-to-day operations at the Boston Globe. She and Daniels will work together to build further synergies among all of The New York Times Company properties in New England which also include Boston.com.
"Mary possesses a wealth of newspaper knowledge and she also understands the need for newspapers to expand beyond their traditional boundaries in an increasingly competitive environment," Gilman said. "She and Rick will make a formidable team when it comes to planning our future. I'm very pleased that she agreed to join the Globe."
Both Daniels and Jacobus will report to Gilman.
"I am delighted to be joining the Globe at this time, with the exciting opportunity to expand the Globe audience in the New England market," Jacobus said. "I look forward to working with Rick and the outstanding team at the Boston Globe to chart the future of the Globe."
"The number of opportunities for media companies to serve their readers and advertisers is expanding rapidly." Daniels said. "We are extremely fortunate to have a base of media brands in Greater Boston that extend our reach as New England's .1 media company. Bringing in a person of Mary Jacobus' talent and track record increases our capabilities at a time when we must ensure our current media portfolio is as productive as it can be."
Gilman, noting that the Globe and its other New England properties and affiliates reach 7 out of every 10 adults in Greater Boston, said these changes "strengthen the Boston Globe's ability to offer advertisers customized solutions to their marketing objectives. Our goal is to drive results for our advertisers by providing a mix of media channels that best match their business objectives whether they are seeking to reach a mass audience or a narrow segment.
"In 1993, the Times Company made a major investment in New England when it bought the Boston Globe. Since then we have added to that commitment with the launch of Boston.com, the purchase of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, our partnership in Metro Boston and our investment in New England Sports Ventures," Gilman said. "This organizational structure and management team will get the most of those investments in driving value for consumers and advertisers."
Daniels, 48, joined the Globe in 1983 after a three-year career with Arthur Andersen consulting. He is a graduate of Northeastern University and received his M.S. from Boston University. A native of Boston, he resides in Hingham with his wife and two daughters.
Jacobus, also 48, is a native of Buffalo, New York, and worked at newspapers in Colorado and Minnesota before moving to Ft. Wayne. She received her B.A. from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, N.Y. She and her husband are the parents of 12 year-old triplets. They are currently in the process of relocating to the Boston area.![]()
