To celebrate the start of the Red Sox season and welcome the team's newest players, including center fielder Coco Crisp, Finagle A Bagel has added an item to its lineup: the cocoa bagel.
The flavor, which will be offered for the next 60 to 90 days, is made with Dutch cocoa powder, liquid chocolate flavoring, chocolate chips, and a coating of crispy cereal. And it's been selling out daily at all of Finagle's 20 Boston-area locations since being introduced last week, which means each store is selling between 50 and 100 a day, according to Finagle's owner, Laura Trust.
''At first, people are like, 'Ooh -- a cocoa bagel?' " said Trust, who is also the Massachusetts-based company's copresident with her husband, Alan Litchman. ''But some people do like to experiment with the less traditional flavors, and it's been pleasing to most of our guests that have tried it."
The bagel isn't meant specifically to honor Crisp -- a former Cleveland Indian who replaced Johnny Damon, now a Yankee, but to salute the team as a whole.
''We're big, big fans," said Trust, who bought the company in 1998 and expanded it from about a half-dozen stores then to 20 today, all within Route 128. Trust, who lives in Brookline, said that when she and her husband were shopping for their house they insisted it be within walking distance of Fenway Park. ''Every single thing my kid wears to kindergarten is Red Sox-related -- the backpack, the T-shirt, the underwear. He's off to school every day decked out in Red Sox."
