Company offers reassurances

Stop & Shop Supermarket Cos. says all checkout-line card scanners at all its stores in New England, New York, and New Jersey are now safe to use because the company has physically secured them to prevent tampering.

The supermarket company says it has alerted issuers of credit and debit cards it determined may have been compromised. It is promising to help any customers who are victims of fraudulent charges with "appropriate protection measures," which could include free credit-fraud monitoring and credit-report corrections.
