Globe wins 2 Best in Business prizes

The Boston Globe received two awards in the 12th annual Best in Business contest sponsored by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers.

Each year the society recognizes the best business journalism in such categories as breaking news, enterprise stories, and projects. In distributing awards, the society takes into account a newspaper's size and frequency of publication.

In the "giant" newspapers category in 2006 , the Globe was cited for its breaking news coverage of the $27 billion acquisition of Guidant Corp. of Indiana by Boston Scientific Corp., a Natick medical devices maker.

Named in the business group's citation were Globe reporters Stephen Heuser, Robert Gavin, Jeffrey Krasner, and Erica Noonan, as well as columnist Steven Syre, correspondent Emily Shartin, and deputy business editor Bennie DiNardo.

Globe columnist Steve Bailey was honored in the society's column category. It is the second year in a row that Bailey, who writes the twice-weekly Downtown column , has won the award from the group.

In both categories, there were three winners among giant newspapers, with all three sharing the award , said Carrie Paden, the society's executive director. The organization, with headquarters at the Missouri School of Journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia, is a non profit made up of business journalists in North America.
