Top holiday toys work with TV or computer

NEW YORK - Mattel Inc.'s stationary bike with educational games and Jakks Pacific Inc.'s electronic magnifying glass may lead US toy sales this holiday season as the industry grapples with the recall of more than 22 million Chinese-made products.

Mattel's Smart Cycle, in which children play games while pedaling, and Jakks' Eye-Clops, which shows magnified items when plugged into a television, are among the "Hot Dozen" toys chosen by Toy Wishes magazine. Seven of them work with a TV or computer, according to editor-in-chief Jim Silver.

The recalls, which prompted more testing and congressional hearings, came as manufacturers geared up for their busiest season. The fourth quarter, which includes Thanksgiving and Christmas, accounts for more than a third of annual revenue for Mattel and Pawtucket, R.I.-based Hasbro Inc., the world's two biggest toy makers.

"Given the high level of scrutiny toys have been under this year, manufacturers have tested toys to assure safety," said Chris Byrne, a contributing editor to Toy Wishes magazine. "I don't think the recalls will affect holiday sales overall because people still are going to buy toys for their kids that kids want."

None of the recalled toys were eligible for the Toy Wishes list because they weren't new this year, said Byrne. The products were unveiled yesterday at New York's Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.

Mattel recalled 21 million toys in the last two months because of lead paint or loose magnets that may detach.
