NEW YORK—CBS executive Tony Petitti was hired Thursday as president and chief executive officer of the MLB Network, baseball's 24-hour-a-day cable channel set to launch on Jan. 1.

Petitti has been executive producer of CBS Sports since July 2002 and executive vice president since December 2005. This year he became responsible for the CBS College Sports Network, formerly CSTV.

Baseball estimates that the network, which will televise games live on Saturday nights during the season, will be available in about 50 million homes. It will operate, at least initially, from Secaucus, N.J., but plans to build a headquarters on 125th St. and Park Avenue in Manhattan.
