PHILADELPHIA—Sunoco Inc. said Monday one of its subsidiaries and SunCoke Energy Inc. will build a coke manufacturing plant to provide the fuel and steam to an adjacent United States Steel Corp. steel-making facility in Granite City, Ill.

The plant will have the capacity to produce about 650,000 tons of screened blast furnace coke per year. The coke will be sold to the steel maker under a 15-year contract for an undisclosed sum.

Construction of the $290 million plant is slated to begin May 5 and should take about 18 months to complete.

Sunoco shares closed down $1.81, or 3.6 percent, to $49.06.
