Opening Glance: Utility company stocks open mixed

NEW YORK—Shares of utility companies opened mixed Tuesday as the broader market declined slightly.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index dropped 0.46, or 0.03 percent, to 1,395.91, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 2.12, or 0.09 percent, to 2,422.28.

Here is how some utilities are trading:

American Electric Power Co. Inc. rose 34 cents to $44.37

Pepco Holdings Inc. fell 10 cents to $24.89

Consolidated Edison Inc. rose 12 cents to $41.71

Southern Co. rose 8 cents to $36.98.
