NEW YORK—Shares of mortgage lenders slipped Tuesday after Countrywide Financial Corp. reported an $893 million loss for the first quarter.

Here is how shares of some mortgage lenders and thrift banks fared Tuesday:

Countrywide Financial was unchanged at $5.83

IndyMac Bancorp lost 1 cent to $3.38

Washington Mutual Inc. fell 12 cents to $12.48

Sovereign Bancorp dipped 3 cents to $7.70
