NEW YORK—Shares of construction and engineering companies opened mostly higher on Wednesday with the broader market as the Commerce Department said the U.S. economy grew -- though by only 0.6 percent -- in the first quarter.

The sector shrugged off a first-quarter profit from Chicago Bridge & Iron Co. that missed Wall Street estimates.

How shares of some construction and engineering companies were faring:

Chicago Bridge & Iron, down $7.61, or 15.8 percent, to $40.70.

KBR Inc., up 18 cents to $31.05.

Hill International Inc., up 16 cents to $14.45.

Emcor Group Inc., up 4 cents to $25.43.
