NEW YORK—Shares of gold mining companies rose Wednesday shortly after the opening bell as prospects for another Fed interest rate further weakened the dollar, thus brightening the attraction of gold stocks.

The dollar fell, with the British pound climbing to $1.9686 from $1.9681 late Tuesday.

Here is how some gold mining companies are trading:

Goldcorp Inc. rose $1.13, or 3.3 percent, to $35.60

Yamana Gold Inc. added 27 cents, or 2.2 percent, to $12.75.

Newmont Mining Corp. rose 66 cents to $43.58

Barrick Gold Corp. rose 79 cents, or 2.1 percent, to $38.29.
