TORRANCE, Calif.—Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc. said Thursday its April U.S. sales rose, as higher demand for small cars and hybrids more than offset a drop in light truck sales.
Toyota sold a total of 217,700 vehicles, up 3.4 percent from 210,457 in the same month last year.
Adjusted for two additional selling days in this month compared with last, Toyota sales fell 4.5 percent.
Sales of passenger cars rose 11.9 percent to 134,863 units from 120,556 in the same month last year, as demand for the Yaris small car jumped 58.1 percent to 11,434 and sales of the Prius hybrid rose 66.6 percent to 21,757.
Light-truck sales fell 7.9 percent to 82,837 from 89,901, as demand for the RAV4 sport utility vehicle dropped 11.9 percent to 12,773 and sales of the Tundra pickup truck fell 6 percent to 13,350.
Sales at the automaker's luxury Lexus division fell 10.2 percent to 23,350 units.
So far this year, Toyota sales are down 3.3 percent to 789,448 units from 816,312 at the same time last year.
Adjusted for one additional selling day in the first four months of this year compared with last, Toyota sales are down 4.2 percent.
Toyota's U.S. shares rose $1.20 to $102.70 in afternoon trading.![]()
