CARPINTERIA, Calif.—CKE Restaurants Inc., which operates the Hardee's and Carl's Jr. burger chains, said Thursday it sold 59 restaurants as part of a refranchising program.

The company said it has sold 195 restaurants to franchisees since April 2007.

CKE said 51 of the restaurants were sold to MJKL Enterprises Midwest LLC. The restaurants are located primarily in Kentucky and Illinois. With that purchase, MJKL now owns 109 Hardee's and Carl's Jr. restaurants.

MJKL also agreed to build a minimum of 35 new Hardee's locations over the next eight years, CKE said.

Another eight restaurants, located in the Little Rock, Ark. market, were sold to Saddle Peak LLC, the company said. The franchise company also agreed to build at least five new Hardee's locations over the next four years.

Financial terms were not disclosed.
