NEW YORK—Shares of large pharmaceutical companies opened lower Tuesday as the broader market fell on disappointing earnings reports from mortgage lender Fannie Mae, homebuilder D.R. Horton Inc. and Swiss bank UBS.

Here's how some key drug makers performed Tuesday:

Wyeth, down 3 cents to $45.54.

Merck & Co., down 15 cents to $38.83

Bristol-Myers Squibb Co., down 6 cents to $23.18.

Schering-Plough, down 15 cent to $18.60.
