NEW YORK—Telecom service providers opened lower Tuesday, with Qwest among the sector's top decliners after posting a 35 percent drop in its quarterly profit.
The broader market retreated following disappointing results from mortgage lender Fannie Mae, homebuilder D.R. Horton and Swiss bank UBS.

AT&T Inc. fell 55 cents to $39.30.
Sprint Nextel Corp. fell 16 cents to $8.56.
Verizon Communications Inc. fell 29 cents to $38.61.
