NEW YORK—Shares of apparel makers dropped Thursday, after mixed retail sales results suggested higher energy costs are causing consumers to alter their spending.

Some apparel stores, whose merchandise falls into the category of discretionary items, again saw depressed sales, with consumers budgeting more for gasoline and food.

Here is a look at how some apparel makers performed:

Jones Apparel Group Inc. fell 28 cents, to $16.59.

VF Corp. shed 80 cents to $73.75.

Polo Ralph Lauren Corp. dropped $1.01 to $58.87.

Liz Claiborne Inc. dipped 31 cents to $18.16.
