CHICAGO—United Airlines says it has named John Tague chief operating officer as part of a management shuffle aimed at streamlining the organization.

The Chicago-based carrier says Pete McDonald, the former COO, will stay with the company as chief administrative officer.

United says the move will "streamline the organization and enable the company to accelerate improvement in both revenue and cost performance."

United is owned by UAL Corp. The airline is reportedly in discussions about a tie-up that could create the world's largest airline.
