JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—Grocery store chain Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. said Thursday it will feature a special discount or promotion each week to help consumers "stretch their grocery dollars" as customers begin receiving economic stimulus checks.

The company said its "Stretch Your Check" program will begin with a $5 off coupon its May 14 circular. Winn-Dixie said it will cut more than 1,000 prices through July 4.

The supermarket chain added it will cash customers' economic stimulus checks. The checks will be mailed out starting Friday. Some consumers have already received their payments in their bank accounts through direct deposit.

(This version CORRECTS to delete "free" in reference to the cashing of stimulus checks both in headline and third graph.)
