Opening Glance: Utility company stocks rise

NEW YORK—Shares of utility companies rose Friday morning as the broader stock market edged up on an inflation report that met expectations.

The Labor Department's Consumer Price Index grew 0.6 percent last month, just above the 0.5 percent economists expected. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 7.31, or 0.55 percent, to 1,347.18.

Here is how some utilities are trading:

American Electric Power Co. rose 42 cents to $42.38.

Pepco Holdings Inc. rose 28 cents to $26.69.

Consolidated Edison Inc. rose 51 cents to $40.29.

Southern Co. rose 27 cents to $35.31.
