Nearly 20 bloggers launched a "blog rally" to support The Boston Globe and seek ideas to help the financially struggling newspaper, threatened with a shutdown by its owner, The New York Times Co.

The rally, organized by Paul Levy, president of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, got underway at about 10 last night, with the blogs simultaneously publishing a post asking readers to submit suggestions on ways the Globe can improve its financial position. The Globe, like many newspapers, has been hurt by the migration of advertising to the Internet and the current recession.

"We view the Globe as an important community resource, and we think lots of people might have creative ideas that might help the situation," the post said.

"Who knows, someone here might come up with an idea that will work, or at least help."

Blogs are often viewed as competitors of traditional media outlets and contributors to their financial woes.

That bloggers would want to help the newspaper shows "there is something special about the Globe that we want to keep around," Levy said. "It's our way of showing our affection for the paper and how important it is."
