Indictment made in fraud at Harvard Hillel

A former accountant for Harvard University’s Hillel House, a Jewish student organization, stole about $780,000 over five years and spent the money on sports tickets and trips, the state’s attorney general said.
A Middlesex County grand jury indicted William O’Brien, 58, of Framingham on charges of larceny, forgery, and failing to file tax returns, Attorney General Martha Coakley said in a statement. Melissa Monahan, a spokeswoman for Harvard Hillel, confirmed the nonprofit group was the victim.
The investigation began in October after Harvard Hillel staff members discovered accounting irregularities, Monahan said.
Hillel staffers allege O’Brien diverted payments from the organization into an account under his own name, the attorney general’s statement said. O’Brien, a contract accountant at Hillel, was an employee of InSource Services Inc. of Wellesley, Monahan said.
O’Brien will be arraigned in Middlesex Superior Court, said Harry Pierre, a spokesman for Coakley. Robert Robitaille, a management consultant for InSource, declined to comment, citing client confidentiality.![]()
