Defunct temp agency settles bias suit

A defunct North Carolina-based employment agency has agreed to pay $250,000 to settle a sex-discrimination lawsuit filed by a federal agency in Boston.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission claimed that Preferred Labor LLC unlawfully failed to refer women in its Worcester facility to temporary day jobs.

The federal agency says the company complied with illegal requests from customers for male-only temporary workers and retaliated against one woman for complaining, violating a federal civil rights law.

The company agreed to settle the lawsuit after selling its business to another employment agency.

Under the settlement, if the company resumes doing business, it will not to engage in discrimination or retaliation. It also will be required to conduct antidiscrimination training for its employees and managers.
