A Boston developer wants to build what would be the tallest building in the Fort Point Channel neighborhood, a 25-story, 232-unit apartment building and parking garage on A Street.

Goldman Properties filed plans yesterday for property currently occupied by a five-story warehouse that contains artist studios. Goldman did not indicate when it intends to begin construction, saying the economic climate must improve first.

The building would include four levels of above-ground parking for 98 cars. The 315,000-square-foot project is a scaled-down version of a previous proposal that called for large additions atop adjacent buildings at 327 and 337 Summer St.

Following negotiations with the Boston Redevelopment Authority, Goldman said it will take one of two steps to help compensate for the project’s height: Build more than the 30 affordable units it would be required to construct under city rules or donate the building at 327 Summer St. for artists displaced by the project.

Goldman also proposes to pay $900,000 to help build more parks and community space in the neighborhood.
