PARIS—France's Foreign Ministry has praised the decision by French oil giant Total SA to cease gasoline exports to Iran because of increased international sanctions over its nuclear program.

Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero says Iran has gone "90 percent of the way" toward producing weapons-grade uranium used to make nuclear bombs.

Valero says "Total's decision illustrates Iran's growing isolation" as it refuses to abide by the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency sanctions ordering Iran to end its unauthorized uranium enrichment program.

He said Tuesday that European Union officials will discuss in coming days how to implement the latest sanctions against Tehran.
