CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands—Police in the U.S. Virgin Islands say they will increase patrols at tourist attractions following last week's slaying of a 14-year-old cruise ship passenger.

Commissioner Novelle E. Francis says foot, bike and scooter patrols will be boosted around areas popular with visitors. He did not disclose exact figures Thursday.

Last week, Lizmarie Perez Chaparro of Puerto Rico was struck by a bullet and killed while riding in an open-air bus at Coki Point Beach in St. Thomas. She was caught in the crossfire of a gang gunfight that also killed an 18-year-old man.

A local man has been charged with murder in the case.
