NEW YORK — A flight attendant who captured America’s attention when he told off passengers, grabbed a beer, and slid down an emergency chute resigned from his job last week and was not fired, his lawyer, Daniel J. Horwitz, said yesterday.

Steven Slater left JetBlue Airways Corp. Wednesday. He had been suspended following last month’s on-board antics. On Saturday, JetBlue said Slater was no longer an employee but did not give any details, which prompted speculation he had been fired.

Last month, the airline said Slater was suspended pending an investigation. Horwitz said that he and Slater were still working out some details with the airline but would not elaborate.

Slater, 38, worked for JetBlue for about three years.

He was charged with criminal mischief, reckless endangerment, and trespassing. His next court date is Tuesday.
