PORTSMOUTH, N.H.—Volunteers on the New Hampshire Seacoast will form a book brigade to move an independent bookstore -- box by box -- to its new location 100 yards away.

RiverRun Bookstore owner Tom Holbrook expects 100 volunteers to turn out to clear out the shop he has run on Congress Street in Portsmouth for the past five years.

Holbrook says he expects it will take an hour to move 6,000 books to RiverRun's new location on Fleet Street. His estimate is based on experience.

A similar brigade of volunteers moved books to his Congress Street location in 2006, just from the opposite direction.

Holbrook says the move will save about $50,000 a year in rent. He says that's a significant savings for an independent bookseller competing with the digital book trade.
