UP headquarters earns green building certification
OMAHA, Neb.—Union Pacific Corp.'s headquarters building in downtown Omaha is more efficient than 76 percent of similar U.S. office buildings.
That's why the U.S. Green Building Council recently awarded Union Pacific its LEED Silver certification. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.
The railroad's 19-story headquarters was completed in 2004, and is the second building in Nebraska to be certified as a green building.
CEO Jim Young says the company tries to improve efficiency in its offices just as it does in its trains.
The 1.3 million-square-foot building uses efficient fluorescent lights or LED lighting wherever possible to help reduce energy consumption.
UP says 88 percent of the furnishings meet sustainability criteria, and the railroad recycles 68 percent of its waste.![]()
