HARTFORD, Conn.—United Technologies Corp. is celebrating its employee education program, which is reaching the $1 billion mark.

Chief Executive Officer Louis Chenevert on Tuesday will honor more than 250 employees who have earned college degrees in the company's employee scholar program.

United Technologies, the Hartford-based parent company of Otis Elevator, Sikorsky Aircraft and other businesses, says more than 32,000 employees in 50 countries have earned degrees in the program's nearly 15 years.

The program pays for tuition, books and fees for employees who enroll in accredited programs. The program does not restrict courses that employees take and does not require that coursework pertain to a worker's job.

In Connecticut, United Technologies says it has spent nearly $300 million on higher education for employees.
