FALLS CHURCH, Va.—General Dynamics named John Casey as executive vice president of its marine systems group Wednesday.

Casey, 57, joined the defense contractor in 1979 and currently serves as president of its electric boat business. He succeeds Phebe Novakovic, who was elected president and chief operating officer last month.

In addition, Kevin Poitras, 60, the electric boat business' senior vice president for engineering, design and business development, will fill Casey's former position, the company said.

The appointments are effective May 2.

The marine systems group, which includes the electric boat business, builds a variety of ships for the U.S. Navy and commercial customers. It generated net revenue of $6.6 billion in 2011.

Shares of General Dynamics Corp., based in Falls Church, Va., fell 66 cents to $72.44 in morning trading.
