The next Brit invasion

Source: Slate

tescostores.jpgBritish company Tesco is invading the U.S. to take on Walmart. Soon they'll be carpet bombing their cute little high-end convenience stores all over California. Tesco typically stocks 7,000 items, including fresh produce, wines, spirits and an in-store bakery. Not a Slurpee in sight. With its lean retail practices, Tesco dominates the British grocery market, with a 30 percent market share and has kept Wal-Mart's British unit, Asda, to a 17 percent market share. Tesco wrote the book on small is the new big. They have four kinds of stores ranging from big (60,000-square feet) to tiny ("Express"). So while many communities don't want a Walmart or don't have the acreage, Tesco could just waltz in with style.
