A new survey finds that half of all IT workers admit that they've fallen asleep at work. And nearly half of all those techies also "admit they've kissed a co-worker." In between all that, they're um, keeping the network up. Interestingly, more men than woman admit to doing all that snoozing and smooching. The occupation most likely to have slept at work? Government workers. Apparently tax payers have paid for nearly two-thirds of them to sleep.

October marks the 2nd anniversary of Business Filter. One of my most popular posts? It's about these fun little Automatic Name and Mission Statement Generators. So I wonder if this post will make the hit list. Sim Web 2.0 is a little game that automatically generates a name, a press clip and a list of things to do for your Web 2.0 startup.

OK, so you have your photos on your Facebook page, and maybe your blog. And maybe MySpace. Why not on LinkedIn? Good idea, eh? Funny that they're only just launching it tomorrow. It's curious that it wasn't there before. But then the idea of the site had to do with interconnected resumes and rolodexes. I guess photos never made their "to do" list. I'm still using both LinkedIn and Facebook. I wonder if I will be using both next year or not?

Rumors are that Facebook is shopping around for a massive investment from a corporate partner (Microsoft?). Why does a company "expecting $150 million, and profits to boot," need so much new capital? Om Malik says that the biggest reason may be to pay the lawyers. The New York Attorney General has subpoenaed Facebook due to concerns that its claim of being safe is not, well, true. MySpace needed Newscorp's deep pockets to survive its legal and safety onslaught, and they weren't even subpoenaed.

Jupiter's David Card named green as one of the top 5 trends in the youth market and then asked the tough question. Is it a fad or a phenomenon? About 15 percent of teens strongly self-identify as green. But their actual engagement in community service is the same as prior generations. What are they doing? Buying green fashion and brands that increase their personal reputation and show their green spirit. It's a world of infinite options for teens - so they pick the green option. So will their buying power roll up to be strong enough to change the world? Time will tell.

If marketing is all about storytelling, then you'd better build a product that's worth talking about. Seth Godin points to LittleMissMatched, socks targeted at 12 year old girls. The company is "tripling in size each year." Why? Because they made socks that make girls say something very powerful to each other... "Want to see my socks?" What's remarkable about the socks? They come 3 to a pack and none of them match.

You are a story machine

This morning at the MIXX conference in New York, I got lucky. I was one of the people in the room when Charlie Rose interviewed Seth Godin. I cover Seth a lot here on Da Filtah because he's really good at distilling important ideas and making them actionable. Many of the ideas are about marketing, but all of the ideas are about humans. And Charlie Rose? He's the man.
Both Godin and Rose are master storytellers. And in this interview they discussed how media, marketing and advertising are all about stories. Seth calls humans "story processing machines." "No one in the real world makes decisions based on facts," he said, instead we "fit everything into a story" we're playing through in our heads. And, whether they know it or not, good marketers are in the business of "telling stories that spread." Usually easier said than done...

Blogging from NY
I'll be blogging from New York this week we're I'm attending a number of conferences.
At the moment I'm at the OMMA (Online Media and Marketing Association) Conference, learning some best-practices for email marketing (hey, someone's got to do it).
Overall the conference is themed "World's Collide - All hell breaks loose" which alludes to the fact that the internet is a comet that has made a "deep plunge into the peaceful paradise that was the traditional world of advertising and marketing." As media habits move online, the industry is scrambling to understand how to adjust and where to shift those valuable ad dollars.
I will also be dropping in on MIXX, a conference that also explores how agencies and media companies can innovate on the interactive web.
Later in the week I'll be attending The Millenials and the YPulse Tween Mashup - as if I didn't have enough teens and tweens at home.
I'll be blogging as WiFi allows. If you are at any of these conferences, send me a note and maybe we can connect.

Boomers continue to spawn industries as they move through their senior years. Take Smooth Mooove, a moving company based in Georgia that caters to seniors. "Seniors are among those most likely to move, as they downsize or head off to sunny retirement digs." But moves can be unmanageable – the heavy lifting, the countless details, emptying attics and basements and, *shudder,* reconnecting entertainment and computer systems. Concierge services like Smooth Mooove don't just appeal to seniors. Corporations are considering them as an employee benefit for children of aging boomers. Think, just for a second, how many hours it would take to move your parents.
