The real reason we email?

Matthew Ingram agrees that teens don't use email. But he says "they won't be teenager[s] forever." Eventually they'll hit the work force where email takes on a life of its own. Why is it so engrained in companies? Ingram points out its main feature. Namely, it's "what some like to call an 'audit trail' and others like to describe as 'butt-covering.'" And given that, for some, email is a great way to look like you're working when you're not…it's unlikely to disappear. Instead he advocates using "as many different methods as possible, depending on the situation" - a wiki, a Google doc, a chat or "(God forbid) even a phone call."
