How did Roammeo get started?
Roammeo is a web and mobile search engine made for the moments when people know that something good must be going on in their area, but they don’t know what that “something” is.
It began with Roammeo’s co-founder and CEO, Jessica Cole falling in love with her college city of New Haven. She read newsletter subscriptions, walked from bulletin board to bulletin board, and created a Field Trip Society list to discover and share everything that was going on. Meanwhile, as an urban studies major and Urban Fellow, Jessica saw the other side of the story: local event hosts were still having to rely on expensive print advertising or ineffective online marketing to let their events be found. She and her teammates knew there had to be a way to save their peers time and organizations money.
In 2011, Roammeo launched. The team, which is made up of current and former Yale students who have hosted dozens of events of their own, made it their mission to build an automated, intelligent event discovery service that would solve the gap between event hosts and local residents.
Since then, Roammeo won the Yale Venture Challenge and the Yale College Council App Competition and made the leap into Boston as a MassChallenge finalist. They now have a live site and application for iPhone and Android with hundreds of thousands of events and are working to expand to new areas in the coming months.
What does Roammeo do?
Roammeo connects people with the best events in their communities with a website and mobile application that updates based on where someone is standing and what they are interested in. Anyone can open the app or the site, create a profile with their interests, and get instant, custom recommendations of events around them. Events are tailored to students, sports fans, parents, music lovers, entrepreneurs, and dozens more. Results are map-based and adjust to where a user is standing.
For event hosts, Roammeo is a way to make an online calendar or print catalogue interactive. Roammeo can automatically pull events from an existing calendar, brand them, share them dynamically based on users’ interests and locations, and allow event hosts to manage them with our custom admin client. Roammeo has partnered with nonprofits, university departments, local businesses, and city-level bureaus.
To power all of this, Roammeo has created its own technology to aggregate, parse, categorize, geocode, and deliver events. Roammeo is now featuring events for the holiday season in Boston, New Haven, and Cambridge.
