Developed by Japanese game developer Square, Final Fantasy XI is based on the popular console role-playing franchise Final Fantasy. The game, which was published in the United States in 2003, is set in a world called Vana'diel that takes some of the basic concepts and settings from the previous iterations of the franchise but allows for more freedom. Players can now choose among various races and other traits in creating their own characters. A new expansion to the game is scheduled to be released before the end of this year.
