A hometown brand disappears

The fabled Filene's brand came to an end in September, as Macy’s completed its $17 billion takeover of regional chains, including hometown Filene’s, across the country to create a shopping empire of more than 800 stores.

For some, the Macy's national launch was a day of shopping mourning. But the loss of these venerable institutions in some ways, set the stage for the comeback of the languishing department store, which has been squeezed for years by discounters and luxury merchants. The transformation of Filene's and other regional chains to the Macy's brand is an attempt to revive the format.
