Breaking the record

  • Next
  • Previous
On Oct. 3, The Dow Jones industrial average soared to an all-time high, finally surpassing the previous peak reached at the height of the technology bubble.

The market, however, did not get there easily. It made a run at the Dow record in the spring, but stalled in the face of rising oil prices, accelerating inflation, and higher interest rates. It made another run in early autumn, but faltered again, this time over concerns the economy was slipping towards recession.

Once the milestone was reached, the average soared to several new records during the rest of October.
