When the Army closed Fort Devens in 1996, after 79 years as a military base, the state and nearby communities inherited abandoned buildings, contaminated land, and a big hole in the economy of this part of Central Massachusetts.
Fast forward ten years. In June, Global drug maker Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. decided to build a $660 million manufacturing plant on the former base, bringing as many as 550 jobs to Massachusetts and marking a milestone in the state's efforts to attract new businesses.
