5. Acquisitions at technology companies
It has been a big year for Massachusetts mergers and acquisitions. IBM, which has been shopping the region for promising tech firms for years, bought four Massachusetts companies this year. After its most recent purchase, a $1.7 billion deal with Netezza of Marlborough, IBM's vice president of business development said the computer giant is "constantly looking" for potential acquisitions. Not to be outdone, data storage giant EMC of Hopkinton made its own round of purchases, capped by big data firm Isilon Systems Inc. for $2.25 billion.
