In the late 1990s, Russia's economy was in ruins amid political unrest. In the United States, government data suggested that an economic slowdown was imminent. On Aug. 31, 1998, fearful investors frantically dumped shares of some of the largest US companies.

Here, people lined up at an ATM to get money at a supermarket in central Moscow to withdraw rubles.
