Controversial tax breaks for Mass. projects

Tax breaks: Potentially $80,000 in state taxes, plus $2,800 in local tax breaks
The natural foods store received a tax break in 2005 when it moved to a larger building down the street from its old location. It promised to create at least one full-time job. In exchange, it received a 4 percent discount on its local property taxes for 10 years and a state investment tax credit estimated to be worth as much as $80,000 based on its promise to invest $1.6 million. The state approved the tax incentives, even though Wild Oats had already opened the new store several months earlier.
