Boston's Downtown Crossing, once home to more than a half-dozen major department stores, is now down to two -- Filene's and Macy's. The recent announcement of Federated Department Stores purchase of May Company was followed by an announcement that most of the regional May Co. stores will soon bear the Macy's name. As we prepare to say goodbye to Filene's, here is a look at other stores that once held real estate in the downtown crossing area. The R.H. White's store from 1953 was located on Washington Street, the street floor of which became occupied by Filene's Christmas bargain store.
