The recent financial crisis that has threatened the nation's banking system and roiled international stock markets has been referred to as the "great recession." While it was - and continues to be - a tough economic environment, it doesn't compare to the widespread unemployment and poverty that resulted in the Great Depression between 1929 and 1939.
