Washington Street has long been a center of commerce in Boston. Before its decline in the late 20th century, due to forced relocation of "red light" businesses from the old Scollay Square to a section of Washington Street, the area was an important mecca for theatergoers, especially those seeing Vaudeville-type shows.
Now, Washington Street in enjoying a continuing renaissance, as theaters are being rehabilitated and reopened while luxury condos are developed nearby.
