Vertex has worked on drugs for both cystic fibrosis and HIV. In 1998, it began work on cystic fibrosis drugs and In 1999 Vertex helped in the discovery and creation of Agenerase, a protease inhibitor that is used to treat HIV. Protease inhibitors are drugs that prevent viral infection, and are used in combination with other antiretroviral medications.
