Top 10 scams of 2011
Scam of the Year
Identify it: Hundreds of thousands of people have gotten e-mails that look like an official notice from the Better Business Bureau. The subject line says something like Complaint Against Your Business, and the instructions tell the recipient to click on a link or open an attachment to get the details. If the recipient does either, a malicious virus is launched on their computer.
Avoid it: Check to see who the e-mail says it is from. Complaints go out from the local bureaus, not from the headquarters office. Also, hover your mouse over the link to see if its destination is really a BBB.org address.
