On January 11, Marcus Schrenker, head of Heritage Wealth Management Inc., put in an emergency call as he flew his plane over Alabama, saying the windshield had imploded and he was bleeding.

Authorities say the call turned out to be fake. Schrenker allegedly allowed his plane to crash as he escaped in an attempt to fake his own death. He was found two days later. Schrenker has been charged with misleading customers and misappropriating hundreds of thousands of dollars. Tom Kieth, Schrenker's public defender, said his federal trial in Florida will begin in May at the earliest.
