Partners HealthCare posts 75% more operating profit

Partners HealthCare , the parent of Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital , reported a 75 percent increase in operating profit to $133 million in the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, up from $76 million the year before. Nonoperating revenue was $492 million, including investments, private philanthropy, and a $186 million payment from Amgen Inc. to settle a licensing dispute. In all, net profit for the system was $625 million. Vice president of finance Peter K. Markell said the increase was due in large part to more surgeries and a better financial performance for member hospital North Shore Medical Center , which broke even in 2006 after losing about $25 million in 2005. Eduventures to sublease space from Gillette in Pru
Eduventures LLC, which consults with education-related businesses and agencies, will sublease 48,507 square feet from Gillette, which has vacated a large amount of space in the Prudential Tower in the Back Bay since being acquired by Procter & Gamble Co. in 2005. Eduventures will move from 99 and 125 Summer St. and expand to occupy the 9th and 10th floors of the Pru, owned by Boston Properties Inc., according to the real estate firm Trammell Crow Co., which represented Eduventures. Children's Hospital reports 25.8% lower fiscal results
Operating profit at Children's Hospital Boston dropped 25.8 percent to $46 million on revenue of $978 million for the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, the hospital reported. That compared to $62 million in the previous year. Chief operating officer Sandra Fenwick said lower profit was caused by higher wages and other expenses including energy and the addition of 400 jobs to handle more complex cases, improve quality, and expand outpatient care in the suburbs, Fenwick said. Nonoperating revenue, mostly from investments, was $55.9 million, for a total profit of $101.9 million. (Christopher Rowland)

Raytheon receives Navy contract for F-18s upgrade
The Navy said it awarded a contract modification worth $156.3 million to Raytheon Co. to provide additional funds to upgrade several F-18 aircraft with 50 early laser targeting systems. Work will be performed in McKinney, Texas, and El Segundo, Calif., and will be completed by November 2009. (AP)

Georgia company acquires Dynisco LLC for $243m
Roper Industries said it acquired Dynisco LLC, a Franklin supplier of software and test-measurement and control technologies, from Audax Group for $243 million. The acquisition is expected to add to Duluth, Ga.-based Roper's 2007 earnings and cash flow. (Dow Jones)

N.Y. investment firm CEO gets record Wall St. bonus
Morgan Stanley Inc., the second-largest US investment house, gave chief executive John Mack $40 million in stock and options for 2006, the largest bonus awarded to a Wall Street CEO. Mack, 62, was awarded 461,821 stock units valued at $36.2 million on Dec. 12, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. He was also awarded 178,945 options to buy Morgan Stanley shares, valued at about $4 million. (AP)

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. of Waltham acquired Franklin-based Cohesive Technologies Inc., a maker of sample extraction and liquid chromatography products. Financial terms were not disclosed . . . Shares of Anika Therapeutics Inc. rose $1.03, or 8.3 percent, to $13.39 after the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services gave the Woburn company's osteoarthritis treatment Orthovisc a separate reimbursement code. Anika said the code will improve access to Orthovisc . . . Boston Scientific Corp. said it is recalling about 51 of its Mach 1 Guide Catheters after finding that some units may have excess strands of resin near the hub. If excess resin were to detach during a procedure, it could obstruct a blood vessel. No injuries have been reported from the device. (Globe wire services)
