Boston Scientific Corp. is putting its efforts to reach chronic pain sufferers on the fast track. The medical-device maker said it will sponsor a Formula race car team as part of a Race Against Pain marketing program.

While the Natick company is best known as a manufacturing of cardiac stents, it also produces such products as the Precision spinal cord stimulation system, which can be used for pain management.

The promotion will feature Mike Roman, who will drive the Boston Scientific car as part of the Sports Car Club of America's National circuit. In 1994, Roman injured his knee playing basketball. A severe infection following surgery resulted in four progressive amputations of portions of his right leg, leaving him suffering from chronic pain. His pain was controlled with the Precision system, the firm said. The company did not disclose the campaign's cost.
