100 largest employers in MassachusettsListed alphabetically, here are the 100 largest employers of all kinds in Massachusetts, including public and private businesses and nonprofit organizations, but not government agencies or public authorities. The list is as of June 30, 2005, and is compiled by the Massachusetts Department of Workforce Development from unemployment insurance submissions made by major employers. Because it deems the information proprietary, the state agency will not release the precise number of employees each entity has. This list has some quirks and omissions stemming from the fact that it ranks entities filing for specific unemployment insurance purposes. For example, CVS is a significantly bigger pharmacy chain here than Brooks or Walgreens, with more than 10,000 employees as of December, but CVS Corp. is not on this list because each of its stores is a separate corporation for legal purposes including unemployment insurance, company officials said. Another example: Big chains like Burger King and Dunkin' Donuts whose outlets are owned by franchisees are not on the list. 99 West (99 Restaurant and Pub)
